In one of the programmes in the BBCTV series Rome Unpacked, they cooked some Jewish food in the ghetto there. One of the things they cooked were artichokes and I recall that they commented that artichokes were a favourite with the population there as they could take them with them if they were once again subject to ethnic cleansing (I don’t know if I’ve used the correct term – perhaps it is religious cleansing). This made me wonder whether your liking for artichokes was not just as a vegetarian, but also because of your ancestry?

And if you’ve not seen them, then I’d recommend the Italy, Sicily and Rome Unpacked series which are repeated every so often on weekday afternoons on BBC2 and also overnight with signing.
