So, this is a mood cycling pattern in Bipolar Disorder where you have four or more distinct episodes of mania or depression in one year.
When I first experienced the disorder at university, my mood cycled every month. So, I had twelve mood cycles per year. Now, on carbamazepine – the anti epileptic drug that I take as a mood stabiliser – I experience a couple of mood cycles per year.
Another characteristic of rapid cycling is that one’s mood is either high or low, with no ‘normal’ mood. From that point of view, I still rapid cycle: my mood is always either hypomanic (a bit high) or depressed (low).
